ABOUT KATE LIU & ERIC LU

  • Pianist Kate Liu gained international acclaim after winning the Bronze Medal and Best Mazurka Prize at the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland. She was also awarded the audience favorite prize voted by the Polish public on the Polish National Radio. 

    As a soloist, Kate has performed in many important venues, such as the Seoul Arts Center, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Carnegie’s Weill Hall, Severance Hall in Cleveland, La Maison Symphonique de Montréal, Warsaw National Philharmonic, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Shanghai Concert Hall, Osaka Symphony Hall, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra Hall, Phillip’s Collection, and others. She has collaborated with orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Polish Radio Orchestra, Poznan Philharmonic, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Daegu Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, Bellevue Symphony and Evanston Symphony Orchestra. Her debut album of works by Chopin was released on the Fryderyk Chopin Institute label in 2016.  

    Born in Singapore, Kate began playing the piano when she was four years old and moved to the United States when she was eight. Her private studies then were at the Music Institute of Chicago with Emilio del Rosario, Micah Yui and Alan Chow. Early on in her career, she won 1st Prizes at the Third Asia-Pacific International Chopin Competition and the New York International Piano Competition. She received a Bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music studying with Robert McDonald, as well as a Master’s and Artist Diploma degree from The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Robert McDonald and Yoheved Kaplinsky.

    Eric Lu won First Prize at The Leeds International Piano Competition in 2018 at the age of 20. The following year, he signed an exclusive contract with Warner Classics, and was a recipient of the 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant. In October 2022, Eric made his debut with the Chicago Symphony and Riccardo Muti.


    Recent seasons highlights include performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and appearing at the BBC Proms with the Shanghai Symphony. Eric Lu has worked with the Oslo Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Singapore Symphony, and on tour with the Orchestre National de Lille. Conductors he collaborates with include Riccardo Muti, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Ryan Bancroft, Marin Alsop, Vasily Petrenko, Edward Gardner, Sir Mark Elder, Thomas Dausgaard, Earl Lee, Ruth Reinhardt, Martin Frӧst, and Long Yu.


    Born in Massachusetts in 1997, Eric Lu first came to international attention as a Laureate at the 2015 Chopin International Competition in Warsaw aged just 17. He was also awarded the International German Piano Award in 2017. Eric is a BBC New Generation Artist from 2019-22. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Robert McDonald and Jonathan Biss. He was also a pupil of Dang Thai Son, and has been mentored by Mitsuko Uchida and Imogen Cooper.

ABOUT MAESTRO MICHAEL MIROPOLSKY

A native of Russia, Michael Miropolsky has served as principal violinist with the Moscow State Symphony, performed with the Radio and Television String Quartet in many countries around the world, and recorded internationally on the Melodia label.

Michael Miropolsky came to the United States in 1990 and has been the Assistant Principal Second Violin with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra as well as a featured soloist. Along with his numerous musical activities; judging competitions, and extensive teaching, Mr. Miropolsky, who strongly believes in the value and importance of musical education, often conducted presentations at schools and colleges. He coaches young musicians and orchestras, gives master classes, and performs as a guest conductor all across the state of Washington.

Michael Miropolsky is both the founder and conductor of the Jewish Community Center Chamber Orchestra, conductor of the Northwest School Orchestra in Seattle, and served as a faculty member for the University of Puget Sound. He also founded and is the conductor of the Seattle Conservatory of Music Chamber Orchestra Young Virtuosi, which has grown to be the finest student group in the area. He released the group’s first CD, The Best of Young Virtuosi, in 2001.

In 1999 Michael Miropolsky founded the Seattle Violin Virtuosi, a unique ensemble consisting of 12 violins and a piano accompaniment. Three years later, he founded the Seattle Chamber Orchestra and continues to serve as Music Director for both organizations. He released eight CDs with the aforementioned groups on the Ambassador label. The groups earned immediate recognition from critics and audience alike. The Seattle Times named these groups “the best of both musical worlds: Russian tradition and American excellence.”

In 2002, Michael Miropolsky was chosen as the new Music Director of the Cascade Symphony Orchestra. He released the orchestra’s first CD, Symphonic Treasures, in 2007. In 2009, Miropolsky was elected as the Music Director of the Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra.

He led the Seattle International Film Festival Orchestra in the SIFF Gala in 2012. In 2013, Miropolsky took leadership of the Thalia Symphony Orchestra.

His latest recording projects include a CD of opera arias with soprano Christina Kowalski, a CD with euphonium virtuoso Adam Frey and the Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra, and CD with the Seattle Violin Virtuosi entitled Berceuse. In 2013, Michael Miropolsky, Rick Steves and the Cascade Symphony Orchestra created the innovative program, Europe, a Symphonic Journey, which received a 60-minute presentation on PBS and was released on both CD and DVD.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Michael Miropolsky wrote an autobiography, Theme and Variations: My Life’s Journey, and the Cascade Symphony Orchestra published the orchestra’s first cookbook, Measures and Pleasures.
